Description:
Butterfly Scents is an open-ended narrative of discovery. It invites the audience to stop looking at art as a passive observer, step inside the canvas, and embark on their own adventure inside the art piece. Part of the imaginative Little Men series, Butterfly Scents plays with sensory paradox, turning a biological impossibility into a narrative of curiosity and freedom. The central contours curve into the unmistakable shape of a butterfly’s face and antennae. An illusion that playfully winks at the fact that butterflies don’t smell through a nose, but feel the world in ways entirely their own.
As typical of the other pieces in the Little Men series, the people are always added last to the artwork, as the artist steps directly into the work to go on an adventure, she envisions herself interacting with the piece and having fun inside of it. Here, one small figure scales a tightrope high up between the sweeping, colorful butterfly wings, climbing into the vast, open space of the mind. Near the bottom, another tiny voyager sits tucked beside the giant, watching eye, holding a horn up into the air as if trying to play music directly into the senses, capturing the intangible essence of a scent you can almost hear. Butterfly Scents proves that art isn’t just something you view; it’s a living world waiting for you to jump in and explore.
