Community Murals and Social Impact Projects
Since 2011, Masha Schwartz has led creative mural installations across schools and shelters through HoDC
Workathons. Each project combined bold art with social purpose, addressing real community needs.
HODC MacFarland High School Mural | 2011
Challenge: Frequent vandalism and profanity in boys' bathrooms was creating a negative environment for students.
Solution: Instead of punishment, Masha proposed an artistic solution. She designed graffiti-style murals that blended student expression with structure. Future artistic additions were encouraged, making students feel ownership of the space.
Result: Profanity and vandalism significantly decreased. The project sparked interest in other school-wide creative initiatives.
HODC Ludlow Taylor Elementary School Mural | 2012
Challenge: The school wanted to encourage students to believe in their brain power and learning potential.
Solution: Masha led the design of a vibrant mural that visually represented the mind's ability to grow, learn, and share.
Result: The mural became a daily point of inspiration and talking point for students and teachers alike.
SOME Transition Shelter Mural | 2012
Challenge: Children in a transitional shelter needed a space that felt safe, uplifting, and imaginative.
Solution: Masha transformed a small, dim room into a bright, treehouse-themed sanctuary. Chalkboard clouds let children draw and write, and countryside scenes helped them feel calm and playful.
Result: The mural became one of the most loved and interactive spaces in the shelter, improving mood and engagement for kids
HODC Noyes Elementary School Mural | 2013
Challenge: The school wanted to promote unity, diversity, and school pride through student collaboration.
Solution: Masha facilitated a student-led mural design competition. The winning design showed diverse children holding hands with the message "Together we make a difference." Students helped paint the final piece.
Result: The mural fostered teamwork, school spirit, and student-led creativity.
HODC Powell Elementary School Mural | 2014
Challenge: The school sought to honor graduating students and celebrate lifelong learning.
Solution: Masha designed two murals featuring brain-shaped tree foliage—symbolizing growth through knowledge. Names of graduates were added to the branches and roots. Morning and night themes gave each tree a unique feel.
Result: The mural became a living record of student achievement and a symbol of pride. Names continue to be added today.
HODC Charles Hart Middle School Mural | 2019
Challenge: The school's auditorium stage lacked a focal point that reflected its identity and spirit.
Solution: Masha designed a custom mural with the school logo and geometric shapes inspired by the existing auditorium design. It tied the stage into the room's aesthetic and reinforced school branding.
Result: The mural elevated the space for performances and events, strengthening visual identity and student pride.
